Lucas' 1st Day of Kindergarten

We have embarked on the road of public education with Lucas starting kindergarten this fall.  His first day was Monday August 25, 2013 at Burton Hill Elementary in Fort Worth ISD.  He is in the Spanish Immersion program where the teacher speaks in Spanish most of the day and the kids learn it over the course of the year.  The children are mostly English only speaking and this gives them a chance to become bilingual in speaking, reading, and writing another language by the end of 5th grade.  Giam was all for it as a way for the boys to learn Spanish and him to reinforce it at home.  I have often wished I was bilingual especially at work and thought the way that Europeans learn multiple languages in school was a good idea.  We thought we would give it a try.  We talked it up and Lucas was excited to start school and learn Spanish.

Night before Kindergarten dinner of choice: cheese burgers at In and Out.  Lucas' favorite.
 Morning of the first day.

Daddy and his boys!

 Me and Lucas.

His school is currently a 30 minute drive from where we live.  Ahh!  But it is a good school with a unique program so we hope it pays off.  Here he is with little brother watching on at his seat writing his name.

His teacher is Mrs. Koppes.  She seems to have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for kindergartners which is all you can hope for in a first teacher.

No tears were shed by me or Lucas this first day.  He has done the "school" thing 2 or more days a week since he was 6 months so we both knew what to expect.  As the weeks have gone by there has been more emotion from both of us.  Five days a week at 7 hours a day is a lot for a 5  almost 6 year old who was used to having more "play" time in pre-school.  He really doesn't like Mondays now :( I have missed not having him on my days off with the other 2 boys especially nice weather days when we could be outside at a park playing.  Marcus has missed him some but has enjoyed getting more attention also.  Overall kindergarten has been a bigger adjustment for are family than I thought.  I am writing this 2 months into it and already dreaming about Thanksgiving and Christmas break.  Lucas likes sharing all the new Spanish words he has learned but has also found some of the work more challenging.  We felt he needed a challenge in Kindergarten since he was already reading and doing double digit addition from preschool.  It is wonderful to see his little brain absorbing a new language so well.  He teaches me new words and remembers them so much better than I do.  We will take it one day at a time.  I pray that Mondays become a little easier :)
